US Open of Surfing
The "Granddaddy" of them all... the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California. It's the oldest organized surfing event in the world and welcomes nearly half a million fans and visitors each year to the Huntington Pier.
2004 was the first year IMG introduced Beach Games as an umbrella event to the US Open of Surfing expanding the already enormous event into Skateboarding, BMX, FMX and Volleyball. As one part of a 2 website project, the US Open of Surfing website provided an in-depth look at competition schedules, media, press as well as photo galleries and athlete blogs.
At the time we built this site, the most common question from our clients was, "How do I update the site?" Our reply was always, "You can manage all of your content on your own." For an on-site event management company like IMG having this level of control was absolutely necessary. For the first time, they could update results on-the-fly and post photos of winners - as it happened. It included an internal Banner-Ad Management system as well as an integrated Email Campaign Manager. There was no stone left unturned when creating this best-in-class event website.
As the first of its kind, this site impressed the title and presenting sponsors Honda and O'Neill as well as Bank of the West, the Beach Games title sponsor. It was the first of nearly a dozen sites we built for IMG over the following 3 years.
